Have you ever thought about joining the US Army? Well, if you are a foreigner, you can definitely apply for it! Every year, more than 8,000 immigrants and permanent residents become members of the U.S Army, with the hope of one day becoming citizens of the country. As the top army in the world, the US military welcomes immigrants from all over the world to join their ranks.
But what are the eligibility requirements and application process for joining the US Army as a foreigner? Let’s take a look.
Firstly, interested individuals must relocate to the United States. To do so, they must apply for an immigration visa and relocate to the country. There are various types of visas available, such as the diversity based visa, special immigrant visa, and employment-based immigrant visa. By enlisting in at least one of the various branches of the US military, individuals who are qualified applicants under the provisions of US immigration law can join the military.
Once you have decided to join the military, the next step is to choose your path. There are two main paths: becoming an enlisted member or an officer. Enlisted members make up the majority of the military workforce, and will have to sign up for a 4-year active duty and another 4 years inactive duty. After completing their duty time, they can decide whether to extend their contract or re-enlist. In contrast, officers are the minority in the military, and they must possess a four-year college degree and complete an officer training program. Although they receive a higher paycheck than enlisted members, they also have certain perks and benefits.
After deciding on your path, the next step is to find a recruiter who will explain the job options available based on your qualifications. If you are applying for enlistment, you will need to report to a Military Entrance Processing Station (MEPS).

Once you have met the requirements at MEPS, you will need to take the Armed Services Aptitude Battery (ASVAB) test. This is a multiple-choice exam that measures your aptitude and helps determine which career option is suitable for you. The ASVAB comprises ten individual tests that cover various topics such as general science, mechanics, electronics, and mathematics.

You will also need to pass a physical evaluation, which includes a physical training test, hearing and vision examination, drug and alcohol tests, and specialized tests for certain medical conditions. After passing the physical evaluation, you will meet with a counselor to determine your suitable career. This is an important step as you want to make sure that you are satisfied with the terms of your enlistment agreement.
Finally, you will need to swear an oath of enlistment and meet a few requirements, such as owning a high school diploma, having no more than two dependents, and succeeding in the ASVAB and Military Entrance Station Medical exam. It is also important to note that there are age limits for military enlistment, and a background check and security clearance will be required.
Joining the US Army as a foreigner is definitely possible, but it requires careful planning and preparation. By following the eligibility requirements and application process, you can become a proud member of the US military and enjoy the benefits of serving your adopted country. Good luck!
