As at October 30 2022, remote workers making $2,750 a month, or four times Portugal’s minimum wage, can live and work in the seemingly idyllic European nation.

Remote workers, commonly referred to as digital nomads, can now apply for a five-year residency permit or a one-year temporary stay visa. Applications can be processed at any Portuguese Consulate or at Portugal’s Servico de Estrangeiros e Fronteiras, which is the country’s immigration agency.

To qualify for the new digital nomad visa, remote workers must submit proof of self-employment or a contract of employment, proof of income documents for the previous 90 days, and tax residency documents.

Who Can Apply and What Is Required?
This visa is intended for those who work remotely and have an ongoing remote working arrangement with an employer outside of Portugal. It grants them the opportunity to live and work in Portugal for up to one year.

Before applying, it’s important to know the criteria for eligibility. To qualify, applicants must have a valid passport from an eligible country, proof of employment from an employer based outside of Portugal, proof of sufficient funds to support themselves during their stay, and health insurance coverage valid in Portugal. Additionally, applicants must commit to living in Portugal for at least five months out of the one-year period they are granted.

In order to apply, you will need to submit your application online through the Portuguese government’s Immigration Portal. Along with completing the application form, you’ll also need to provide documents that prove your identity, nationality, employment status, and other relevant information.
Once your application has been submitted and approved, you will receive a confirmation e-mail with instructions on how to proceed.
